First-Name Basis

Since April, we have gone to the doctor about every other week. It is getting to the point that when I call, they will sometimes say, "Is this Russell's mom?" Poor Russell is having quite a time with his ears. He's now had 4 ear infections (including 2 doubles).

We went again yesterday, and the PA told us that both ears are full of fluid (explaining his fussiness and lack of napping yesterday) but not yet infected. Of course, if the fluid doesn't drain, they will be infected soon.

Yes, we are talking tubes. The PA said that based on his history, he will probably need tubes within the next 1-2 years. But, since he doesn't run high fevers with his infections, and since he still eats well, and has no antibiotic allergies, they probably won't consider tubes soon.

So until then, I guess we'll continue to spend many afternoons like this:

  1. next 1-2 YEARS?! Are they monitoring his hearing to make sure it's not scarring? Hope he gets better soon! Tyler had tons of them his first year and ended up with tubes at 1 1/2.

  3. Tubes are a huge blessing :) If he has constant fluid and a history of infections I would definitely consider them. Our oldest has had 3 sets (had to be redone when they fall out and the 3rd set they do are "permanent" until older childhood). My daughter has had one set. They work fabulously eliminate the need for antibiotics and pain meds which have side effects of their own.

We see Dr. Kraus at the Ear Center and he is an amazing doctor and incredible man. The decision is usually made based on fluid more often than infection numbers. Having fluid is like living life with your fingers stuck in your ears. The longer it goes on, the greater the deficit. May want to at least get a consult and let them test his fluid levels and hearing (very easy to do). And if he needs tubes it is a 20 min procedure and they use only gas for anesthesia- very easy, no IVs, no pain.
