We drove down to my parents’ house for Thanksgiving on Thanksgiving morning. Best idea ever. The last time we drove down on Wednesday was when I was pregnant with Russell, and what should have taken 4.5 hours took over 7. So we skipped that traffic this time and got there in 5 hours – perfect! While Meredith took her nap, Russell played and “helped” Mimi make a sweet potato casserole (aka ate the marshmallows.)
Then we headed over to my aunt’s house for a Thanksgiving just like I remember from growing up While the adults grazed on appetizers, the kids played with old toys my aunt had gotten out of her attic and cleaned for them.
There were several cars and trucks that Russell loved. This is the only photo I got of the kids together and in their nice outfits – clearly I wasn’t thinking straight!
Our table – minus Meredith (who wasn’t hungry and spent dinner bringing us things from the living room). Russell is sitting in the front chair even though you can’t see him.

After dinner, I changed the kids into their PJs and everyone sat around talking and watching football. We ended up staying until almost 9, so the kids didn’t get to bed until almost 10 – we never keep the kids up that late but they did just fine. In fact, they got their second wind about 10 minutes before we left and were running and giggling all over the place!
In fact, the kids also slept in the same room together last night for the first time ever and did great with that too – we didn’t hear a peep out of them! What a perfect end to a great Thanksgiving. We truly have much to be grateful for.
